This week, The Broke and the Bookish is asking for the Top Ten Books if you Like (x) – and I chose 80’s movies.
These movies have made up such a huge part of my life. When I was younger, they couldn’t be considered the classics they are today because they were new! I remember renting Ghost Dad like 8 times in a row at Blockbuster, my sister making me hide my eyes when Adam and Barbara fill their wedding clothes during the seance in Beetlejuice, my tiny bedroom TV in high school that had a built in VCR so I had a pretty sick VHS collection, thanks to Target sales. I still completely love/want to be Winona Ryder.
If you’re more into Weird Science or Earth Girls Are Easy, you might like:
- Ready Player One: takes place in the future/a videogame world, but the entire world is obsessed with the 80’s JUST LIKE YOU
- 8 Bit X-Mas: another videogame book, but this one takes place in the 80’s and is all about Nintendo
If Valley Girl is more your speed, you might be interested in:
- Eleanor and Park: Try not to make a mix tape (or I guess a playlist) with these songs.
- Weetzie Bat: Obviously I’m into 80’s punk in books (and out!)
- Paint it Black: Los Angeles 80s. Not what you might expect if you’ve read White Oleander.
If you’re still completely grossed out by the leech scene in Stand by Me, try:
- Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe: THE FRIENDSHIP (and 100% leech free!)
If you REALLY love Huey Lewis and the News, you definitely need:
- American Psycho: Watch the movie to see a man attempt to feed a cat to an ATM (but also read the book because we’re here for the books).
Are you still traumatized by Artax drowning in the Swamps of Sadness? Try these feels on for size:
- Tell the Wolves I’m Home: a different look at the 80s
- Jellicoe Road: only part of this book takes place in the 80s, but it’s not like I can NOT mention it.
- The Perks of Being a Wallflower: Truthfully, I don’t love this book but it also calls for a mixtape.
And I haven’t read it yet but just put it on hold at the library because I forgot it was already out:
- White Lines: New York in the 80s!
I can’t wait to see what everyone comes up with this week!
